Sustainable development

« Our feet on Earth »

Groupe Frayssinet’s scientific letter

Pierre LARCHER : The media and politicians as a whole have in turns been sending the same warnings about climate change and soil pollution. What is the Groupe Frayssinet’s experts’ viewpoint on this issue ?

Maurice VIEL : the scientific body IPCC – Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – is unanimous : a major climatic mutation, initiated by our economic development 150 years ago, is threatening the future of our planet. Two main factors of planetary degradation are greenhouse gases emissions and the harmful emission of chemical synthesis compounds. The notion of sustainable development requires a general mobilization initiated in France by the protocol for environmental protection : le Grenelle de l’environnement. An environmentally-friendly growth must be rapidly integrated to the whole part of our economic systems and especially into the field of agriculture.

Pierre LARCHER : In this state of emergency, what is the position, role or commitment of Groupe Frayssinet ?

Gilbert GARAPIN : Environmental awareness is not just another fad for us. It has been a long-standing commitment of our Company. Our organic fertilizers are in complete harmony with soil environmental maintenance.

Pierre Larcher : While a change of direction in your agri-business trade towards eco-products seems absolutely necessary, don’t you feel worried about possible mishaps ?

Maurice VIEL : As in all fields of the industry, we are worried by some opportunistic companies that will « greenwash » their products without hesitation. As a matter of fact, organic waste products, urban sludge composts, green waste composts, household waste fermentable composts as well as synthetic fertilizers make up a real threat of diffuse pollution for natural milieus.

Pierre LARCHER : And still, haven’t all these products been under strict regulation ?

Gilbert GARAPIN : the AFNOR 44095, 44051, 42001 fertilizer standards have integrated these products without guaranteeing their efficiency and their harmlessness, given the heterogeneous origin of their sources and the huge number of undetectable chemical pollutants they contain : heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, carcinogenic, mutagenic and bio-storable substances.

Pierre LARCHER : How can we protect ourselves from such hazards ?

Maurice VIEL : To face « the environmental emergency », it is necessary to apply the precautionary principle by using the most secure products from natural and traditional origin. Only will these organic restitutions guarantee good carbon cycle restoration and the humic fertility of our earth.

Interview reported by Pierre Larcher, following a meeting of Committee of Professionals
The Comité de Professionnels was created in 2002 and counts legal experts with the Courts of Appeal, experts in mycotoxicology, phytopharmacy, engineers in research and laboratories( arboriculture, viticulture, and green spaces) technical advisors andpresidents of associations, advisors in agronomy, professors : CIRAD – IRD Montpellier, university of Sciences in Montpellier, Chambers of Agriculture and inter-professionsal committees.
